Physical Education

Fitnessgram
Physical Education is required all four years of high school.

If a student passes the state fitnessgram and their Physical Education classes in their first two years, they can be excused from Physical Education their last two years of high school. This has always been the law.

In the last few years, the enforcement of this law has become a state wide mandate. Counselors can now find on a student's transcripts a line stating whether or not the fitnessgram has been passed. If not, the student will automatically be enrolled in a Physical Education class until the fitnessgram requirement is satisfied.

District Freshmen Requirements
Freshmen are required to do two additional mini courses during Physical Education class.

Life Skills which takes ten days to complete and covers the following topics: the value of good health, decision-making for health, risk-taking & substance abuse, the media & health, managing stress, anger & other emotions, family communications, and finally healthy relationships.

Tobacco and Sexual Harassment is a two hours presentation/discussion given in groups of about 30 students generally over a two day period. The tobacco discussion focuses on health facts and the embedded media tactics tobacco companies use to get their future customers. The sexual harassment presentation provides definitions & videos of several simulated situations and possible courses of action and outcomes.

Physical Education Courses
The general course covers the following content areas: principles of fitness training, bio-mechanics, aquatics and/or water safety, combative and/or self-defense training, gymnastics, individual & dual sports, rhythm & dance, and finally team sports.

Students are required to at least weekly run/power walk a timed mile in preparation for the fitnessgram.

Please see the course syllabus for more detailed information.
